Auger processes and switching Indium Tin Oxide with femtosecond laser pulses
Professor Sir John Pendry

Abstract

Indium Tin Oxide, ITO, is the workhorse of high speed switching of light. High intensity pulses switch ITO from a metallic to a transparent state within a few tens of femtoseconds by heating the conduction electrons. Recent experiments using multi-GW intensity pumps reveal previously unseen processes where very hot conduction electrons have enough energy to promote valence electrons into the conduction band via the Auger effect. This high intensity switching has different characteristics from the low intensity process and offers the possibility of even faster switching rates and of shaping the window of transparency. We construct a model which accurately reproduces the features seen in experiment..

Professor Sir John B. Pendry

Professor Sir John B. Pendry is known for his work on metamaterials, electromagnetic materials that owe their properties more to their internal micro-structure, than to their chemical composition. He has worked at Imperial College London since 1981 where he served as Dean, Head of Physics, and Principal Faculty of Physical Sciences. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society, Foreign Associate of the US Academy of Sciences, and a Foreign Member of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences. Amongst his several awards are the UNESCO Niels Bohr Gold Medal, the Kavli prize for nanotechnology, the Dan David Prize for nanotechnology, and the Kyoto Prize laureate in Advanced Technology.
