Professor Pierre-Louis Lions appointed as New Chairman of HKIAS

The Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS) is pleased to announce Professor Pierre-Louis Lions has newly taken up his new role as the Chairman of HKIAS. A world-renowned mathematician and Fields Medalist, Professor Lions' exceptional leadership and influence are evident in his accolades, including the 2024 Distinguished Fellow Award from the International Engineering and Technology Institute, and being ranked No.1 in General Mathematics and Applied Mathematics on the list of Stanford University’s 2025 Top 2% Scientists.

Professor Lions has actively fostered collaboration within HKIAS and CityUHK through his participation in key events such as the Annual General Meetings in 2023, 2024 & 2025 and the International Conference on Mathematical Analysis and its Applications. He recently met with faculty to encourage interdisciplinary exchanges during his delivery of the significant HKIAS 10th Anniversary Distinguished Lecture Series, which focused on the synergy between Mathematics and AI, and highlighted his pioneering contributions to applied mathematics. The year 2026 is set to be an exciting year, as Professor Lions is currently co-organizing an international conference focused on multi-agent systems and AI scheduled for the last quarter of the year, with further details to be announced soon. The Institute trusts that his vision will elevate HKIAS to new heights of academic discovery.

HKIAS also expresses the deepest gratitude to Professor Serge Haroche, who graciously agreed to remain a Senior Fellow to support HKIAS continuously. Over the years, Professor Haroche has provided exceptional leadership, notably steering HKIAS through the landmark 10th Anniversary in 2025 and fostering vital international collaborations.

HKIAS looks forward to this new chapter under Professor Lions’ leadership, while remaining deeply appreciative of Professor Haroche’s enduring contributions to the Institute.
