Renowned Nanotech Expert Professor Sushanta Mitra Unveils Game-Changing Liquid Encapsulation Technology

29 Aug 2025
Professor Sushanta Mitra from the University of Waterloo delivered a distinguished lecture at CityUHK.

The Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS) and the Department of Mechanical Engineering at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) jointly presented a Distinguished Lecture titled "Liquid-Liquid Encapsulation: A game-changing Technology" on 26 August 2025. The session featured Professor Sushanta Mitra, Executive Director of the Waterloo Institute for Nanotechnology at the University of Waterloo, Canada.

Professor Mitra introduced a robust encapsulation framework where a thin shell-forming liquid stably wraps a liquid core. He detailed two primary mechanisms—impact-driven and magnet-assisted—that provide efficient protection for the core analyte, even in aggressive surroundings.

Professor Lee Duu-Jong, Chair Professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, facilitated the lecture, guiding a dynamic discussion on the implications of this research.

Professor Sushanta Mitra is a full Professor in the Department of Mechanical & Mechatronics Engineering at the University of Waterloo. For his contributions to science and engineering, he has been elected a fellow of several professional organizations, including the Canadian Academy of Engineering, the Royal Society of Chemistry, and the American Physical Society. An entrepreneurial mind, he is also the Founder & CEO of Canadian and Dutch startups focused on quantum computing and ultra-fast encapsulation technology.

The lecture was supported in part by the Kwang Hua Educational Foundation. For further details, visit here
