Professor Ke Lu Returns to HKIAS: Inspiring the Next Generation of Materials Scientists at CityUHK
Professor Ke Lu, a distinguished Senior Fellow of the Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS) at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) and President of the Liaoning Academy of Materials, visited CityUHK on 13 April for a day of focused academic exchanges. His visit highlighted ongoing collaborations in materials science and engineering, fostering meaningful dialogues with faculty and young researchers at CityUHK.
Professor Ke Lu is a world-renowned materials scientist, formerly the founding director of the Shenyang National Laboratory for Materials Science at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. His pioneering contributions to the mechanical behavior of nanostructured metals have earned him numerous accolades, including Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (2003), Foreign Member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering (2018), Member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina (2005), the 2020 Future Science Prize in Physical Sciences and the 2022 Institute of Metals / Robert Franklin Mehl Award.
The visit commenced with an individual meeting with Professor Jian Lu, Senior Fellow of HKIAS, Dean of the College of Engineering and Chair Professor of Mechanical Engineering at CityUHK. This was followed by an engaging group sharing session involving Professor Jian Lu’s research team, which included PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and junior faculty members. The session provided a vibrant platform for in-depth discussions on current research challenges and emerging opportunities in advanced materials.
Professor Ke Lu then held one-on-one meetings with several CityUHK faculty members from the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Systems Engineering:
Professor Steven Wang, Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering
Professor Kan Ma, Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering
Professor Yingxia Liu, Associate Professor, Department of Systems Engineering
Professor Changhong Linghu, Presidential Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering
Professor Chengyi Dan, Assistant Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering
These individual meetings allowed for tailored exchanges on specific research interests, potential joint projects, and the latest advancements in fields such as nanostructured materials, mechanics, and systems engineering. Participants appreciated Professor Ke Lu’s insightful perspectives and his generous sharing of experiences from leading large-scale materials research initiatives.
The visit underscored HKIAS’s commitment to building strong international and interdisciplinary networks that support cutting-edge research and nurture the next generation of scholars. Such interactions not only enrich the academic environment at CityUHK but also pave the way for future collaborative endeavors that address global challenges in materials science and engineering.
HKIAS warmly thanks Professor Ke Lu for taking the time to engage with our community and looks forward to continued fruitful collaborations in the years ahead.
