Our Senior Fellow Professor Ammari Habib recently visited HKIAS from 5 to 12 April 2025 and participated in academic exchanges at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK). During his visit, he delivered an Intensive Lecture Series on the Mathematics of Subwavelength Physics from 7 to 11 April 2025.
Professor Ammari's lectures focused on mathematical theories for metamaterials, particularly subwavelength physics derived from first principles. They explored applications in wireless communications, biomedical imaging, and quantum computing. The series presented a coherent mathematical theory for subwavelength resonators, identifying phase transitions and degeneracies responsible for exotic phenomena. The analysis used the generalized capacitance matrix to characterize subwavelength resonant modes, including long-range interactions. For more information about the lectures, please click here.

These lectures greatly benefitted the mathematics and physics community and scholars not only from CityUHK, but also other local and non-local universities, including Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Tsinghua University, Shenzhen University, Southern University of Science and Technology, and Zhejiang University. The event successfully brought together experts in various fields of mathematics and physics, promoting international collaboration and knowledge sharing.

In addition to the lectures, Professor Ammari met with Professor Shuk Han Cheng, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS) and Associate Vice-President (Research), and engaged in academic exchanges with Professor Sir John Ball, Senior Fellow who was also visiting HKIAS during the same period, Professor Hongyu Liu, Chair Professor, Department of Mathematics, Professor Bowen Li, Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics, etc. The meetings provided a platform for sharing research insights, discussing scientific advancements, and exploring potential collaborative projects.
Professor Ammari's visit to CityUHK not only enriched the academic atmosphere but also provided a valuable opportunity for researchers to engage in fruitful academic discussions.
Professor Habib Ammari is a renowned mathematician specializing in wave propagation, inverse problems, imaging, and metamaterials. He is a Professor of Applied Mathematics at ETH Zürich and a member of the Academia Europaea and the American Mathematical Society.
