The Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS) at City University of Hong Kong is thrilled to announce the appointment of two distinguished mathematicians, Professor Alessio Figalli and Professor Sylvie Méléard, as Senior Fellows. Their exceptional contributions to mathematics and interdisciplinary research will further elevate HKIAS’s mission to foster cutting-edge scientific discovery.
• Professor Alessio Figalli is the Director of the Institute of Mathematical Research (FIM) at ETH Zürich. He specializes in the wide-ranging fields of Calculus of Variations and Partial Differential Equations, focusing especially on optimal transport, functional and geometric inequalities, elliptic partial differential equations, and free boundary problems. Professor Figalli has received numerous prestigious awards, most notably the Fields Medal (often regarded as the Nobel Prize in mathematics) in 2018. Among his other honors, Professor Figalli has been named a Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, received several honorary doctorates, and even had asteroid 438523 named after him.
• Professor Sylvie Méléard is a Professor of Applied Mathematics at the Centre de Mathématiques Appliquées (CMAP), Ecole Polytechnique. She is a leading expert in probability theory and stochastic processes, she has made groundbreaking contributions to mathematical modeling in ecology, evolutionary biology, and hematopoiesis. Her accolades include being a member of the Academia Europaea (since 2021), a member of the European Academy of Sciences (since 2018), the Irène Joliot-Curie Award - Woman Scientist of the Year (2024) by the French Academy of Sciences, and the Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur (2013).
HKIAS is dedicated to uniting world-class scholars to pursue innovative research and advance knowledge. The addition of Professors Figalli and Méléard enhances the institute’s commitment to academic excellence and global impact.
