Professor Marc Fontecave is a Professor at Collège de France. He is a distinguished member of the French Academy of Sciences, Academia Europaea, and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. His research focuses on the study of catalysts (homogeneous, heterogeneous, bioinspired) and biocatalysts (metalloenzymes and artificial enzymes) as well as electrochemical devices for water splitting and the valorization of carbon dioxide as strategies for chemical storage of renewable energies (artificial photosynthesis).

Professor Fontecave is a graduate of the École normale supérieure Paris-Saclay in Paris, and holds a doctorate in Science.

Professor Fontecave received numerous awards and honours, such as CNRS Silver medal (2004), Achille-Le-Bel Grand Prize of the Société Chimique de France (2011) and Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur (2015), Officier of the Ordre National du Mérite (2021) etc.

The Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS) hosted its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 19 November 2024, bringing together Senior Fellows from across the globe to discuss strategic advancements in research and international collaboration. Chaired by our HKIAS Chairman Professor Serge Haroche, the meeting focused on strengthening global partnerships between the City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) and the home institutions of our Senior Fellows, recruiting leading scholars to HKIAS, and preparing for the Institute's 10th-anniversary celebration in 2025, etc.

Professor Marc Fontecave, a distinguished member of the French Academy of Sciences and a Professor at the Collège de France, delivered a pivotal lecture on 8 November at the recent France-Hong Kong Distinguished Lecture Series, hosted by City University of Hong Kong (CityU). The lecture highlighted the critical need for a coordinated approach between energetic transition and essential policies to adapt to escalating global temperatures. Titled “Necessities and Challenges of the Energetic Transition”, the lecture marked the revival of the series, which had been on hold since 2019. Among the distinguished guests in attendance were Mrs Christile Drulhe, the Consul General of France in Hong Kong and Macau; Professor Freddy Boey, President of CityU; and Professor Cheng Shuk Han, Associate Vice-President (Research).
