Working at the frontiers of understanding and perception, three professors at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) are set to transform understanding of quotidian devices, such as LEDs or solar panels. As part of the continuing Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS) Distinguished Lecture Series, the three-part section on physics in April and May 2021 introduced some of the most innovative ideas to tackle real-world problems.

Since its establishment, nurturing and supporting early career researchers has been a key part of the Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS) mission. To inspire young academic leaders and promote diversity in academia, HKIAS launched a first-of-its-kind lecture series in this new semester—HKIAS Rising Star Lecture.

As an integral part of their mission of championing cross-disciplinary ideas and their real-world potential, the Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS) at CityU recently presented its Rising Star Lectures in an inperson and online hybrid mode. The lecture series covered five major fields in basic science, covering Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science and Life Sciences, and featured 15 short-listed scholars from CityU who had gone through a rigorous selection process.

As a part of its mission to promote diversity in academia and put an international spotlight on the next generation of academic leaders, in 2021 the Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS) established the HKIAS Rising Star Lecture Series. Between September and November, 15 promising scholars from the City University of Hong Kong (CityU) had the opportunity to present their recent accomplishments in five diverse fields: mathematics, chemistry, physics, materials science, and life sciences. Not only is HKIAS giving these researchers a platform to talk about their work, it is also nurturing their careers by offering grants to fund their research projects at CityU.
