A research team led by scientists from City University of Hong Kong (CityU) has recently designed a structured thermal armor (STA) that achieves efficient liquid cooling even over 1,000°C, fundamentally solving a 266-year-old challenge presented by the Leidenfrost effect. This breakthrough can be applied in aero and space engines, as well as improve the safety and reliability of next-generation nuclear reactors.

Investigating how science can better understand diseases like cancer is essential for our research endeavors at the City University of Hong Kong (CityU). Professor Michael Yang Mengsu, Vice-President (Research & Technology) and Yeung Kin-man Chair Professor of Biomedical Sciences of CityU presented an inaugural online talk titled "Single Cell Analysis of Tumor Heterogeneity During Cancer Metastasis" for the Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS) Distinguished Lecture at CityU on 18 February 2022.

Electronics and photonic technologies advanced rapidly in the last two decades and have become promising solutions to complement electronic technologies. To showcase the top-notch research and develop innovative applications at various levels from electronic or photonic materials to devices and systems, the Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS) initiated the Distinguished Lecture Series on Electronics and Photonics from March to April. Five lectures focus on discussing the latest advances in electronics and photonics technologies, covering topics from Nanotechnology and Nano devices, Antenna Design, Photonics, Power Electronics and Systems, Terahertz and Millimeter Waves, Wireless Communications.

An authority in microwave antenna design, Professor Kwai Man Luk, the Chair Professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering at City University of Hong Kong (CityU), presented an online talk as the second part of the Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS) Distinguished Lecture Series on Electronics and Photonics on 17 March 2022, titled "Antenna Scientists – Magicians in the Era of Wireless Connectivity". Professor Leung Kwok Wa, Chair Professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering, was the moderator. Over 500 online participants from both local and overseas, including renowned scholars and researchers, attended the virtual lecture.

Professor Ke Lu, Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS) Senior Fellow, was awarded the prestigious 2022 Institute of Metals/Robert Franklin Mehl Award from The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS). TMS bestowed the honour to Professor Lu for “his seminal contribution to the understanding of the mechanical behaviors of nanostructured metals and his world-class leadership of materials research”.
