5G Technology and AI Applications

Professor King-Ning Tu, a renowned materials scientist, presented a distinguished lecture titled “5G Technology and AI Applications” for the Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS) at City University of Hong Kong on 9 October 2019.
Has Moore’s law reached the peak? In this lecture, Professor King-Ning Tu, Distinguished Chair Professor of Department of Materials Science and Engineering at National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan, focused on discussing the development of Moore’s law and other matters related to 5G technology and artificial intelligence (AI) applications.
Professor Tu defined the technical requirement of 5G communication technology and AI applications, saying that both of them are now extremely active and productive, and changing our society rapidly.
According to Professor Tu, Moore’s law has been sustained the growth of semiconductor technology for 40 years. However, there is a sign that this law will stop going further. Professor Tu pointed out that Three-dimensional integrated circuit (3D IC) is regarded as a promising candidate to go beyond the peak of Moore’s law. Professor Tu explained that AI can overcome the reliability problem in mass production of 3D IC, and he elaborated the application with a simple example.
Professor Tu concluded that the combination of 5G and AI applications will make possible capabilities that never existed and create potentially transformative technologies.
Professor Tu’s research interests are in metal-silicon reactions, solder joint reactions, electromigration, and kinetic theories of interfacial reactions. Professor Tu is an academician of Academia Sinica, a Fellow of American Physical Society (APS), The Metallurgical Society (TMS), Materials Research Society (MRS), and an Overseas Fellow of Churchill College, Cambridge University, UK.
