Reporting in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, IAS Senior Fellow Professor Stephen Smale and Dr. Indika Rajapakse from the University of Michigan Medical School present a way to employ math as a tool to reveal how genetic material and the relationships of cells ultimately produce the function of a various tissue types.

On 7 December 2016, IAS Senior Fellow Professor Ovid J.L. Tzeng received a formal letter from Professor Dr. H. C. Felix Unger, President of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, informing him of his election as Member of the Academy. President Unger also invited Professor Tzeng to journey to Salzburg in March 2017 in order to receive a medal honoring this achievement, as well as devote future efforts to the causes of promoting the Academy's new NEXT EUROPE project and the Alma Mater Europaea program dedicated to cultivating young talent.

诺贝尔化学奖得主根岸英一教授12月1日为香港城市大学（城大）高等研究院主持讲座，发表题为「d区过渡金属魔力的过去、现在和未来」的演讲，并于讲座后与学生会面。根岸教授现任美国普渡大学H.C. Brown杰出化学教授。

香港城市大学（城大）高等研究院于11月14日举行为期两天的研讨会，探讨复杂物质化学。首天由诺贝尔奖得主杰马里．莱恩教授主持杰出讲座，为研讨会揭开序幕。研讨会邀请来自欧洲和内地的学者及著名化学家出席发表演讲，分享他们的学术心得。
