Exploring electronic and photonic advances that will change our lives
The Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS) at the City University of Hong Kong (CityU) recently presented a series of five webcasts that explored breakthroughs in electronic and photonic device development. The lecturers, all professors at CityU, introduced a broad range of topics, including advances in wireless antennas, the future of 6G mobile technology, challenges in building out a modern power grid, the latest applications of nanotechnology in devices and sensors, and new uses for meta-lenses in full-color imaging and light field sensing. All these advances currently—or will soon—impact the daily lives of people across the globe.

HKIAS Senior Fellow Professor George Fu Gao was elected Foreign Member of The Royal Society and conferred an honorary doctorate by the City University of Macau
Professor George Fu Gao, HKIAS Senior Fellow and the Director-General of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention in China, was recently elected a Foreign Member of the Royal Society for his contributions in the field of infection and immunity, particularly relating to emerging viral infections, have helped to improve our understanding of major threats to human health.
In addition, Professor Gao was conferred an honorary doctorate by the City University of Macau on 28 May 2022.

Leading scientists exchanged innovative views on contemporary trends in the chemistry of 2D materials at a three-day online conference co-organised by City University of Hong Kong (CityU) and Nature Conferences, the preeminent series curated by the highly prestigious science journal Nature and Nature journals.

Advances in electronics and photonics herald a new era
The Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS) at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) continues to connect scholars around the globe, allowing them to explore interdisciplinary ideas and address real-world issues.
The most recent HKIAS Distinguished Lecture Series on Electronics and Photonics, held in March and April, was supported in part by Kwang Hua Educational Foundation. The discussion topics covered nanotechnology, antenna design, 6G networks and much more, with five leading scientists outlining the latest research and potential applications of breakthrough technologies. The series attracted an international audience of over 2,000 scholars and guests.

Are we ready for 6G?
Wrapping up the HKIAS Distinguished Lecture Series on Electronics and Photonics was Professor Chi Hou Chan, the Chair Professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering (EE) at the City University of Hong Kong (CityU). He delivered the last online talk of the Series titled "Are we ready for 6G" on 22 April 2022. Over 500 scholars, scientists in THz research, and students joined the virtual event.

Professor Michael Chi Kong Tse, the Chair Professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering (EE) at the City University of Hong Kong (CityU), presented an online talk as part of the Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS) Distinguished Lecture Series on Electronics and Photonics on 12 April 2022, titled "Challenges of Modern Power Grid in the Midst of Deepening Power Electronics Penetration and Increasing Renewable Energy Use". Professor Ron Chen, Chair Professor of the EE, was the moderator. Closed to 300 scholars and students across the world joined the virtual event.

Professor Din-Ping Tsai, the Chair Professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering at the City University of Hong Kong (CityU), gave an online talk as part of the Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS) Distinguished Lecture Series on Electronics and Photonics on 30 March 2022, titled "Meta-Devices: From Sensing and Imaging to Quantum Optical Chip". Professor Hon Yan, Wong Chun Hong Professor of Data Engineering was the moderator.

HKIAS Senior Fellow Professor Ke Lu receives the 2022 Institute of Metals/Robert Franklin Mehl Award
Professor Ke Lu, Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (HKIAS) Senior Fellow, was awarded the prestigious 2022 Institute of Metals/Robert Franklin Mehl Award from The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS). TMS bestowed the honour to Professor Lu for “his seminal contribution to the understanding of the mechanical behaviors of nanostructured metals and his world-class leadership of materials research”.
